My Role

With this project, I was tasked with creating a promotional flyer alongside a social media graphic that could be
shared on Instagram and LinkedIn. Due to the upcoming Fall Break, there was some concern about low attendance. With this in mind, I needed my deliverables to be attention-grabbing to incentivize students to attend.

Designing Within Guidelines

Since this was a cross-campus collaboration, I needed to follow the University of Illinois’ brand standards, including type, color, and visual asset guidelines. The goal was to create a design that felt clean and professional, while still balancing a large amount of event information in a way that was easy to read and visually organized.

Final Designs

Flyer

I started with the flyer layout, focusing on clear hierarchy and intentional whitespace to make the dense content feel readable and organized. To add subtle dimension without distracting from the text, I incorporated the University of Illinois’ Finial pattern in the background in order to give the design depth while maintaining a clean look. To draw attention to the speaker, I added Microsoft and Nike logos beneath the speaker’s photo, highlighting his experience and helping communicate the event’s value at a glance.

Social Media Graphic

Once the print design was finalized, I adapted it into platform-specific versions for Instagram and LinkedIn. I adjusted the layout and cropping to fit each platform’s format while maintaining a consistent and professional look.

Personal Reflections

Surprising Student Engagement

Despite being scheduled right before fall break, the event drew a surprisingly large audience, something I was proud to have contributed to through the promotional work.

Working With Layout

Overall, I was proud of how the final design turned out. It was a tough layout challenge, but I created something that felt informative, professional, and manageable without sacrificing readability or visual appeal. If I had the time, I would have liked to experiment with the layout more as a chance to see if I could have made any improvements.
